The leading trend for financial tools is a combination of software, services and practices that encourage self-sufficiency. Whether you trade CFD, run your own business using specialized accounting software or buy stocks using a mobile phone application, autonomy is the latest trend when dealing with finances.

Business Budgeting as a Protective Measure

One of the simplest ways to self-sufficiency as a business owner is creating a sound business budget. Whereas a new business owner may ignore this aspect of entrepreneurship and hope for the best, establishing a financial contingency plan will help to sustain a business. Using business accounting tools to create both a short-term and a long-term budget gives business owners the confidence and assurance that their business model is sustainable and manageable.

Making Investments Independently

Before the days of advanced technology, investors had to call their stock brokers to place trades. These days, you can trade CFD, currencies, stocks, commodities and more using an electronic trading platform from the comfort of your own home. When on the run or on your way to your meetings and errands, your mobile phone application replaces the conversation with your stock broker. With a simple click, you can unload a particular stock or take advantage of a dip in price and make a stock purchase.

As business leaders become more evolved and knowledgeable in their budgeting practices, planning strategies and using technological devices and software, the potential for greater business profits increases. These new tools and practices save time and money, allowing businesses to prosper and become more sustainable.

Have you ever considered where you’re getting your information? The goal of journalism and news reporting is that the information presented is supposed to be unbiased. All information is to be presented, so that the public is left to form an opinion from that information.

The problem is that too much of the information is filtered. News comes from basically five corporations who control the newspapers, news broadcasts, etc. How do we know that the information we receive is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth? Sure, it’s important to keep some information private. Leaking some information could lead to soldiers being harmed, for example, because their location was leaked.

But for the most part, the public has a right to know how the government is being run, where tax money is being used, and so on. Whether news stories are being edited for the “public good” or to create sensationalist stories that will be more interesting, this type of news reporting is unacceptable.

Reporters and journalists need to be held to a high standard. Instead of skewing the news to fit their own agendas, the real information needs to be released so that the public can understand what is going on the world and do something about it. Creating fluff pieces that have no meaning or making something seem worse than it is is not true reporting. Truly, it’s a disgrace to journalism everywhere. Unless it’s an opinion piece, clearly stated, keep your opinions out of the news.

If a student has access to the Internet and financing, then online education is a possibility that should be explored. The benefits of online education depend on what part of the world a student is accessing it from. Online education is global and gives the middle class in many countries access to what only the privileged or rich had rights to in the past. A quiet revolution worldwide is happening before our Western eyes.

Benefits of online classes in the western world are many, but center around convenience. Convenience for a student means that classes occur across the western nations, 24/7 on nearly any day of the week. Course format comes as your typical college semester, as six- or nine-week courses, or everyday for a month. Classes are synchronous where the teacher is present and guides you in real-time or asynchronous where the set-up is such that you access the teacher as needed. Course mediums are video, audio, or graphics along with text.

Let’s talk about benefits of enrolling from the eastern world perspective. In this context, elearning benefits are about increasing production and profit levels for industry. Most elearning comes from the western realm so businesses having relations with the west benefit from training their workers with the western perspective. More education equals more money all around for everyone involved.

From many eastern government perspectives, online education is a means to dismantle some social and structural problems. By providing funding in selected industrial areas a government can influence the path of trade, nature of the economy, and the incentive to change. Participating in such a program provides a respectable life, and honor.

Any aspiring journalist knows that finding stories to get your foot in the door for covering the news can be a daunting task. With your writing skills and a little persistence, you can start to make a splash. Look no further than your own hometown for a treasure trove of exciting stories.

Town Hall
Your own local government is a great source of stories. To get started, find your town hall’s website, and check for upcoming meetings and agendas. Do some background research on issues that interest you and then head over to the meeting to get your story.

Police Precinct
If crime reporting is your thing, finding stories is as easy as investigating at your police precinct. Call ahead first, then head over. Get to know the police chief, detectives, and beat cops if you have the opportunity.

High School Sports
Many top sportswriters got their start in the news by covering high school sports events…and you can certainly do the same. Check the high school’s website for schedules, and then start covering the events!

Art Galleries and Performing Arts Venues
New exhibits with local up-and-comers are a great way for you to get your foot in the door. Review an exhibit or show, and then interview the artist. You’ll have crafted an exciting article, and who knows, maybe this artist is the next big thing.

Local Colleges
Local colleges and universities host lectures, concerts, and forums that are often free and open to the public. Check your college’s website for a listing of these types of events, go down to one that interests you, and then write your newsworthy masterpiece.

Feeling overwhelmed by bills these days? Has your car payment been dragging you down? Car refinancing is something that many people may have never even considered, but this does not mean it can’t work for you.

For many people, car refinance loans make good sense. One of the first things you need to find out is if you can get a lower APR. If the interest rates are higher than on your original loan, do not waste your time. If the interest rates are lower, checking out the possibility of refinancing would be a wise choice.

Many people have found out that they not only will save money on their monthly payments, they also end up paying their loan back faster. This could be a win-win situation.

You may be wondering what you need to consider before taking this step:

If you are a recent graduate, you may have to wait 6 months after finding a stable job.

If you have moved recently, you will have to wait at least 6 months.

Have a good credit standing.

Have a good, consistent income.

Do not have high credit card balances.

You must not have declared bankruptcy within the past 3 years.

Why not take the time to see if refinancing your loan will help in this tough time? Many others have already taken advantage of it. There are many online sites where you can fill out an application to see if you qualify. Most are quick and easy. Best of all, you will have an answer in a timely fashion, without the long wait.

Most people would be flattered to give an interview. However, the process of actually talking to someone on camera or being recorded can be rather unnerving. To get a really good interview it is important to help whomever you are interviewing feel at ease.

To put the person you are interviewing at ease it would be a good idea to let them know what you will be interviewing them about before they actually go on camera. On professional news shows, the people being interviewed have usually spoke with the person that is interviewing them beforehand to go over the questions. Chances are, the person you are interviewing already has some idea of what you will be discussing, but to put them ease you might give them a list of questions that you will be asking so they can better prepare for the interview.

Whether you are interviewing the person using a voice recorder or are interviewing someone on camera it would be wise to ask the person a few test questions before getting to the important questions. Many people are nervous to be recorded but they will relax after a few moments. So before getting to the important questions, ask the person you are interviewing some basic questions that are easy to answer. Many professional news show use this technique to make people feel at ease. Before getting to the heart of the matter of what they are discussing they usually do general questions to help the person feel at ease. Usually, the general questions are edited out before the interview is aired.

Dictionary.com has a definition of truth which states: “the true or actual state of a matter.” Therefore, truth is what actually happened and the news is supposed to report that truth.

This is easily said and almost impossible to actually do. Each of us has our own biases and we always look at the world through those biases. There is a battle between the Conservative and Liberal news media. Both sides truly believe they are giving non-biased news: which they are from their prospective.

How can you as a purveyor of news know what the truth really is? You can’t. You can get a good approximation and have a decent concept as you watch, listen, or read from different sources. ABC, CBS and NBC are considered to be more liberal leaning news sources and Fox news is considered to be more conservative. Getting your news from both will give you more information and often two different views of the truth.

For political events you can watch C-SPAN and see it as it actually happens, without political opinion being introduced from commentators.

You can also go on-line and read the law or amendment that the law makers are or have voted on. Laws are now available on-line at every level of government.

These are three simple steps: using multiple news sources, watching the actual congressional debate and reading the laws and amendments. If you actually do these you will have a really good idea of what is happening with our government.

For the rest of us the best solution is to watch multiple sources or just line up with the news source we like the best and know that is where our bias also is found.

Elizabeth Taylor was a star and an icon her whole life. On the day of her passing she evoked images of things both good, and unflattering. There was her several marriages and her close personal relationship with the always controversial Michael Jackson. She was remembered for being one of the great stars of her time and a striking beauty that could stop a room upon her arrival. She was a brand, a gift and a legend.

One of the things that Liz Taylor will forever be remembered for was her love affair with diamonds. As long as she could remember she had loved to collect, admire and obtain these gorgeous stones. To fully understand her love affair you must remember the things she did for these diamonds. At one time she wrote a book about her extensive collection of stones and her life-long love affair with them. Her perfume was called White Diamonds and not only became one of the things she was known for during her life, but it was one of the most recognizable fragrances in the world. She had also been working on a line of jewelry before she passed away.

Diamonds weren’t just a passion of Liz Taylor’s, but they were woven into the fabric of who she was and what she represented to a whole army of people. She was the quintessential movie star and because of that her image was only enhanced by the lavish jewelry that she wore. The diamonds she sported were as talked about as her striking beauty and the dress that she wore.

As Liz Taylor passes it’s unclear what the future of the diamond line she was working on will be. There are plenty of collectors out there who were more than interested in what she was doing. The world will never forget this Hollywood legend and the jewelry that she loved.

One of the best ways to find an article to write about for a news story is to take a national news event and write how it impacts your local community.

Is your area in an economic slump like the rest of the country? Are you in a major resurgence? Interview local politicians or college professors and get their take on the local economy. Check with your local realtors and homebuilders, you can even check with local merchants and get their stories.

There are always national political stories that will have local impact. Talking to local leaders will give you insight into the impact that the national political environment will give to you. Often “man on the street” comments can be interesting to bring into an article.

Is crime in your area following the national trends or is your area staying independent from the national scene. Compare and contrast the good and the bad to give your readers a point of reference. Most have no idea what the statistics are and the comparison can help show where there is good and where your area needs to improve.

There are constantly new breakthroughs in science, medicine and technology. Did your local area contribute to any of the current breakthroughs? How will these improvements impact your local scientists, doctors and engineers? Not all improvements are good, try to find an opposing view and get both sides to weigh into the issue.

There are always changes happening in education. Check with your local schools, at all levels, to see the impact that the national issue will or will not have in your area.

Don’t forget to include the latest fun and games. National events often impact local events.

Dictionary.com defines plagiarism as: “the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one’s own original work.” Because the above sentence has been quoted and referenced back to Dictionary.com, everyone reading this article knows that this author did not create that definition. It has not been plagiarized.

If the author had said that plagiarism is the unauthorized use and close imitation of the language. And left it at there, then they would have been plagiarizing the meaning from Dictionary.com. There was no quote showing where it began or ended and no reference to the source.

But you changed the “or” to an “and” as you “rewrote” the quote. This is a simple change but nothing from the original quote really changed in the second. This would still have been plagiarism.

What if someone else wrote the material and then I turned it in as my own, but the other person never published it? Yes, that is still plagiarism because the work is still someone else’s and you have turned it in as your own. This is a moral and ethical issue. Did you do the work? Did you create the turn of phrase? Copying a phrase here and there from the other source, but filling it in with mostly your own material can still be considered a form of plagiarism.

If you are not sure if you are plagiarizing then the safest and best thing to do would be to cite your sources. If you are wondering if you should cite where you received the ideas then cite the source. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Writing any news article is a process, a logical sequence of steps, you follow each time you write. Whether you are just starting out or are an experienced professional you will go through the same basic steps.

1) Gather the news that you will be reporting. You are looking for details that will give meaning or clarify the concepts. You must have facts to write the article.
2) Determine your dominant idea. This will become the reason to write your article. You will focus on this idea and use your facts to illustrate and substantiate your idea. Without your dominant idea your article will tend to meander around without any sense of going anywhere.
3) As you work with your dominant idea you gather your facts and determine which ones keep your story moving towards or substantiate that idea. Discard all facts that are irrelevant to your theme.
4) Write your story. Write the whole story as quickly as you can.
5) Reread your story. Begin to edit for flow, content, grammar and spelling. Spell check does not catch all misspelled words. Edit to make your story more powerful and compelling. Step away from the article for awhile and then edit it again. Your words are just that, words. They are not your babies. You can cut them out and re-arrange them and no one will be hurt. Be brutal to your words.
6) Writing a story is almost never a five step process, always done in the same order. As you gather the news you are looking for your theme and you often will visualize the article in your mind’s eye. Editing the article often brings discarded facts back into the story. Be flexible.

Every unbiased article that has ever been written has been biased. Journalists have been trained to report the news in a balanced and unbiased format. Nonetheless, the quotes they use and the adding or removing of content will influence the bias of the article.

We as a human race are biased. We all have opinions. As journalists write articles they process everything they are writing through these biases and opinions. As they write an article their natural bias and opinion will be masked from them and will appear as normal clean journalism, without opinion…to them.

In the old TV show, Sergeant Joe Friday would state, “Just the facts, Ma’am.” And the facts would be laced with her opinions and emotions. His questions would bring out those opinions and emotions. To find the truth as Friday saw it, he had to know the bias to better understand the truth.

This is still true today. While watching any newscast the political leaning of any network can easily be seen. It then becomes easier to see bias and know that bias will impact the opinions or supposed non-opinions of the newscast.

How does a station or any news agency become politically biased one way or the other? The owner, directors and editors control the content flowing through the facility. If the station is conservative then when a liberal turns in their non-biased article, the conservative infrastructure sees the “blatant” liberalism and requests the article be written without the liberal bent. Swap conservative and liberal for the liberal news agency and you will have the same thing happening the other way.

If a news agency is known as liberal or conservative in nature then it becomes easier to recognize that natural bias in the factual reporting of the agency. The viewers can then better gage the reality of the information and filter it within their own biases and opinions.

During the process of finding and purchasing a new vehicle, you have come to realize that your old car can’t be traded in. You love that car but the financial reality has set in. However, you may not need to see it being hauled off to a junkyard.

Donating your car to a charity like Kars for Kids is a very worthwhile option. However, be aware that this donation is not as easy as it sounds and you need to make sure your car makes it to a reputable charity. In many cases, you’ll see ads asking that you donate your car to a particular charity. However many of these are fraudulent. Many are intermediaries who donate only a fraction of the car’s value to a charity.

Also be aware of those donation programs that are touted by well-know celebrities. Do a bit of investigation and find out if the agency actually gives a significant amount of the cars value to the charity.

Here are some other tips for donating your car.

Find a charity, such as Kars 4 Kids, that will accept your vehicle directly. The charity should also be registered as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. You can look this up on the Better Business Bureau’s website. Kars 4 Kids is just such an organization whose goal is helping children attain educations using funds from your donation.

If you can, deliver the car to the organization yourself. This will save the charity money, as they will not have to pay someone to pick up your car.

Protect yourself from any future liabilities. Make sure that that title is transferred properly so that if the car is involved in an accident at a later time, you will not be held responsible.

Donating your car is a very charitable thing to do; just make sure you do it correctly.

If ten people see a robbery there will be ten different accounts of what happened. Most of the accounts will be similar but there will also be major differences. Why?

Each of us process everything that happens around us through our own reality filters. We look at events and then filter or process them through the filters of what has happened to us in the past. All events are processed this way. Why would the news be any different?

Conservatives claim that CBS, NBC and ABC are biased to favor liberal view points. Liberals claim that Fox news is a conservative mouthpiece. Each of the news services claim that they are reporting the news as they see it and they are not biased but are allowing the viewers or listeners or readers the opportunity to decide for themselves.

In reality they are all biased and all reporting the news in their own “unbiased” way. They also know that their viewers, listeners or readers will process the information and make their own conclusions. It comes back to the reality filter within each of us.

CBS, NBC and ABC probably are more liberal in their reporting, just as Fox is more conservative. Each is trying to be neutral in their reporting but they always look at the world through their own filters. Each draws certain audiences which like the presentation of the news based on their own filters.

There are even people who watch both types of newscasts so they can see the differences of the newscasts and then make decisions about what “really happened” based on their own filters of the newscasts. Are you confused yet?

Can newscasts change public opinion? Absolutely. Are newscasts politically biased? How can they not be? Trying to neutral bias causes a bias. We cannot live without bias as we are all human. Recognize the bias and make your own decision.

Beginning journalists deal with a number of challenges, not least of which is the question of how to find stories to cover. While many journalists who are employed with a news source are provided assignments, even they are expected to uncover story ideas of their own based on the happenings of their local communities and the larger world. Finding news stories can be a daunting task; no one ever calls up a journalist to give them story ideas like the movies would have us believe. Instead, reporters are forced to scramble for ideas on their own.

One of the best ways to find news stories is to start with the sources. For instance, following up city and county police department’s daily activities can provide a number of story ideas. You can also check with your local school board; be sure to request a copy of the publicly available meeting minutes. Reviewing the records of public meetings may point you toward some very interesting story ideas. Attend city council and town hall meetings, and be sure to arrive prepared to record and take notes.

If you are more interested in social activities, try watching for free events and lectures sponsored by local colleges or organizations. You can also write about amateur sporting events, review a restaurant or bar band, or even a film or local play. Once you have a concept or idea, look for people whose insight would make an interesting commentary. Plan your questions, schedule some interview, and then gather your notes for your article. Because citizen journalism has become so prolific of late, you should have little problem finding a home for any well-written and researched pieces that you create. If all else fails, you can always start your own blog to have a place for your writing.

Good interviewing technique is essential for those working in the media, especially those working as investigative reporters. Developing good technique is not easy and may in fact take years to perfect. However, there are a number of tips and tricks one can use to help improve interviewing technique. The first is to be prepared. Begin by preparing the location where the interview will take place. While many journalists prefer to meet their subjects in public places, it is important to choose a spot that will not be too loud or have a great deal of customer traffic. Small, quiet restaurants and coffee shops can be ideal interview spots.

Journalists should also have their questions prepared well in advance of the interview. It is important to consider the answers that your subject may have for you, and to prepare for any new avenues of discussion that could branch from your initial questions. You will also want to be ready to delve deeper into your subject’s responses. Instead of just accepting his answer, ask him why he feels that way, or how he came to learn that fact.

The questions themselves deserve a great deal of thought and planning before the interview. Open-ended questions will likely lead the interview off into unknown territory, while closed-ended questions will merely provide you with “yes” or “no” answers. You will want to be careful to create an open and friendly connection with the subject of your interview. Questions that will alienate him or cause him to go on the defensive are probably counter to your intended goals and should be avoided.

Finally, be prepared to record your interview, either with detailed notes or by using a voice recorder. Because you will want to be able to quote your interviewee, you will need to make sure that you catch his words verbatim; for that reason, recording may be the best alternative, provided that your subject agrees to being recorded.

Although most American school systems begin teaching the concept of plagiarism at the earliest possible opening, most U.S. citizens are still not able to adequately define the word in terms of written and other published content. Plagiarism, at its most basic level, is the use of work by another without crediting, attributing or gaining permission. In those early school days, most teachers saw plagiarism as students copied text, word for word, from encyclopedias or other source material when doing reports. Students are heavily encouraged to read the source material and then rephrase into their own words. For many young students, this is not an easy task. Teachers may be better off encouraging their students to first make sure they understand the written content before trying to rephrase it.

Plagiarism in the upper grades of high school more often applies to copying work from previous students. Many unscrupulous students over the years have borrowed or purchased previously submitted work from former students and presented it as their own. Teachers have become more savvy about this process, and by the middle of the first semester or so, many educators can spot the glaring differences in vocabulary and tone that is common in plagiarized work.

By the time they reach college, students should be aware the plagiarism is a serious offense. Many colleges will fail, suspend and even expel students who have been found guilty of plagiarism. Additionally, plagiarism becomes even more complicated when students are asked to comment about various published works. Many young people are unsure how much of what they say has been influenced by their reading, and exactly when and how often those source materials should be acknowledged in citations and footnotes. Every college student should study the concept of plagiarism before attempting written work in order to ensure that they have the principles and rules for citation fully defined and incorporated into their practices.

There is little question that most of the popular news outlets in the American media have a tendency to lean to one side or the other on most subjects such as human rights, taxation, social services and national defense. However, discovering which stations are more likely to present views you can identify with can be a daunting task. For most Americans, watching at least one station of each bent can be extremely beneficial, as you are much more likely to receive the entire story, rather than just the points that are important to one group of people.

While there have long been news commentators that can be identified as right wing, such as Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter, left wing commentators may not be so easily named. Rachel Maddow, in her aptly named show on MSNBC, often provides a more left wing commentary to current events and news happenings. MSNBC hosted another liberal news show framing commentator Keith Olbermann until he resigned in early January 2011 over a dispute with the station management.

Finding news talk shows on the radio may be an easier way to ascertain the political leanings of a specific commentator. For instance, NPR has traditionally given a more humanistic, liberal bent to their news reporting. The aforementioned Limbaugh has had numerous radio talk shows over the years and continues to commentate, even following a number of personal embarrassments. While many people believe that you can tell the direction of bias in a news commentator by listening to who he criticizes, that it not always the case. In fact, the best commentators will be sure to mention every political decision that they can find issue with, whether or not they belong to the same political party as the government or elected official involved. This is typically how reporting by any one person or station can be deemed as fair and equally balanced.

Recent trends in the newspaper industry have seen the demise of many printed dailies while their online counterparts are flourishing. The advent of Internet news sites and the accessibility of blogging programs and applications has given birth to a new type of journalist: the citizen journalist. These involved and interested individuals are filling a gap in American news media by publishing news as it happens, opinion and editorial-type pieces and anything else they choose to share with their readers. While many in the publishing industry are mourning the death of a number of daily newspapers, others are taking advantage of the current climate and becoming citizen journalists.

One of the biggest complaints against citizen journalism is the lack of education or training that these independents receive. However, with such a tough crowd reading their every word, it stands to reason that only the most literal and insightful citizen journalists will garner much of an audience. That fact alone speaks to the concern of an uneducated journalist. Also, while jobs are lost in the newspaper industry, citizen journalists are able to earn a tidy living by selling advertising on their blogs. Even those who refuse to write for an established news source and only publish their pieces on their own websites can earn a nice annual salary.

Citizen journalism is not just an American phenomena. There are a number of citizen journalism outlets in nearly every country of the world. In countries where the media is governmentally controlled, citizen journalist may have a great deal more freedom in what they can publish and the opinions they are able to communicate. This may be the most compelling argument for citizen journalism. Additionally, the participatory nature of blogs, with their comments and responding blog posts, contributes to a much more involved populace in the news and current events. While there remains criticism of the citizen journalist’s claim to objectivity, their power within our communities cannot be disputed.

One of the more tragic outcomes of the Internet’s widespread use is the untimely death of a number of American newspapers. Even the larger newspapers such as the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post and the New York Daily News have taken hits in subscriptions, distribution and advertising. It is fast becoming obvious that the current trend of finding our news on the Internet may be causes the death of the American newspaper. While most journalists are mourning the loss, the younger and more entrepreneurial among them are embracing new technologies to continue in their careers.

Nearly everything found in the modern American newspaper can be accessed quickly and easily via various websites on the Internet. For instance, movie listings and showtimes, restaurant reviews and entertainment venues are all found on numerous websites. Additionally, the Internet allows for much more information to be circulated quickly; newspapers may need to print corrections or follow-up stories later in the week while Internet news sources can simply edit their code and the correction is immediately live for viewing.

All of this change has of course led to a number of jobs in the journalism industry being cut or eliminated. While one can make the case for Internet journalism creating a number of jobs, the truth is that most of these will be of a much more technical nature. Those who know how to set type and operate printing presses will not be trained to code websites or maintain computer equipment. The changing landscape of American media is naturally difficult for old school journalists to comprehend and adjust, but the growing pains experienced now may very well lead to a much more informed general population in the coming years. Getting the news in front of young adults is the first step to encouraging their civic involvement, and electronic news media is much more accessible for the younger generation.

Delivering news to the public is a competitive business. Many networks compete for viewers. Having so many networks to choose from should be a good thing. Unfortunately, it has created an environment so competitive networks have created news shows that attempt to appeal to the masses by outrageous programming.

The networks have become biased and create shows that claim to expose issues such as corporate fraud, government spending and political scandals. On the surface, the programs seem to reflect the frustrations American feel during the current economic down turn.

Much of the news is spun to create strong emotions. News stories are presented in such a way to create anger and outrage. The American public has been pushed to the brink of despair by many of these news tactics. Americans continue to become angry and frustrated. The media continues to fan the flames of these emotions to gain in ratings.

Sadly, this can lead to people losing control and resorting to violence. The recent violence in Tucson found the political parties blaming each other for their harsh rhetoric and accusations. The media is just as responsible as it has used this harsh rhetoric to create controversy and fan the flames.

The American public is angry and many are struggling to survive. The constant bombardment of information related to corporate bailouts and wasteful government spending is sending people over the edge. As a person may be losing his home to foreclosure, he will see a report about million dollar bonuses to executives of companies that received government bail out money.

The way this information is presented is the issue. Those reporting this news often use emotions to appear as champions of the American people. This display of emotion in the media stirs emotions in the viewing audience. It can push a person to the breaking point, which can result in violence.

These days anyone can claim to be a writer or journalist. The Internet gives every one an opportunity to write. Many blogs are written and maintained by journalists as a means to get their work out to the public. There are millions of blogs written by every day people that do not have an education in journalism or any formal writing training. Some of these blogs are news blogs, in which the writer provides commentary on published news events.

The Merriam-Webster definition of journalism is:

a: a person engaged in journalism; especially a writer or editor for a news medium

b: a writer who aims at a mass audience

By this definition, bloggers are journalist. However, they may not be good journalist. The Internet has changed the way we do many things. It has also changed journalism.

The majority of bloggers would never consider referring to themselves as journalist or at least not a professional journalist. Many bloggers do appeal to a mass audience and are quite successful. Many journalists may actually envy many of the successful bloggers.

Most people relate journalists with news reporting and few people would consider bloggers as journalists. In addition, most bloggers typically offer commentary on a journalist’s story. It is rare that a blogger breaks a news story to the public.

The Internet blurs the line between blogger and journalist. It also provides the vehicle for people to become writers and for journalist to publish work in the hopes of landing a great job. The Internet provides a place where everyone and anyone can express and opinion or an idea. Publishing on the Internet is a favorite past time of millions of people.

You only need to search once on a topic to realize the millions of articles that are on the Internet. Most will never be read since most people rarely advance to page two of search engines.

Plagiarism is essentially copying another person’s work and claiming it as your own. Many people have plagiarized without realizing they have done so. It is actually easy to do. You may read material for research and when writing your work, you may inadvertently pass off your work as original. This happens every day all around the world.

Many public officials have faced plagiarism scandals and in the past few years, numerous journalists have been caught in scandals. The problem seems to be growing among journalist. Many of them resigned from jobs at prestigious newspapers.

Getting caught plagiarizing can sometimes end a career in journalism. This is not necessarily the case for public officials. One man that was involved in a plagiarism scandal is now Vice President of the United States. For journalist the penalty for such an offense is immediate dismissal and an end to a promising career. Although, there are some journalists that did recover from their plagiarism scandal. It does, however, take years of hard work to regain the status of a reputable journalist.

Plagiarism on the Internet is so common that anti-plagiarism software has been developed. There are numerous plagiarism checkers that can quickly search the Internet for possible violations. Journalists know this and yet they still risk their careers and plagiarize an article.

To avoid plagiarism, you simply have to give credit to the person whose work you are using to write your article. Journalists have a difficult time coming up with a valid excuse. Many journalists may take the risk hoping they will not be caught. Journalists are competitive and the dream of every journalist is to get that one big story that will catapult their career.

If you are dedicated to your profession, the big story will come. Plagiarizing will only destroy a career.

Each year thousands of graduates armed with degrees in journalism or English, set off on the path to becoming a great writer. Their minds are filled with ideas for investigative reports or the next American novel. They search the Internet and job boards scouring the ads for promising writing jobs. Resumes are sent to newspapers, magazines and television stations.

In the meantime, student loans are coming due and rent needs to be paid. So, many of them end up with jobs they are not really interested but it pays the bills. Their hopes are quickly crushed and they wonder if they will ever write again.

Many will set up blogs in the hopes of creating a massive following and racking up GoogleAdsense dollars. Months go by and they realize all of their efforts only made them $7.63 in adsense dollars. Not even close to the $100 payout requirement.

Out of desperation, they succumb to signing up with an Internet content provider to make extra cash doing what they love. Diving into the work, they diligently write article after article. The joy they feel from being a paid writer is immeasurable.

The joy quickly turns to frustration. How many articles can one write about “Favorite Cookie Recipes” or “How to Get a Date.” The rent is due again and articles must be written to be paid. They hope their hard work will pay off one day and their dreams will manifest into reality. Writing is in their blood and at least writing content is great practice.

There are advantages to selling their writing skills. They can work at home and work when they choose. No need to take a shower, just roll out of bed and start writing. It is a world only writers understand and few others know exists. The world of writers and journalists is competitive. The jobs are few.

Infotainment is a word that has been around since the early 1970s. Today, infotainment describes a new genre of news combined with entertainment. This combination is used to make news programming more enjoyable for viewers. The news programming distinguishes between “hard” and “soft” news.

Many of the infotainment programs tend to stay away from news that is too harsh and depressing. They focus on news stories that have a happy ending or are lighthearted stories. To keep viewers entertained they also include celebrity news, fashion news and a host of other entertainment news stories.

Many television programs fall under the category of infotainment. Some claim to be investigative reporting programs; however, these programs feature popular entertainers and popular public figures. This combination of news and entertainment is not necessarily a bad combination; however, it is used solely to maintain ratings.

Millions of viewers enjoy infotainment programs and one of the most popular infotainers is Barbara Walters. She has made the leap from serous journalist to infotainer over the past 20 years. She is now a popular and well-respected infotainer. Many still refer to her as a journalist; however, she left journalism behind long ago.

She is not the only journalist that has made the switch. One of the most famous infotainers is Geraldo Rivera. He started out as a serious journalist and eventually succumbed to the world of infotainment. His exploits have been well documented and today it is difficult for most people to take him seriously.

Many wonder why such distinguished journalists would abandon such promising careers in journalism to become infotainers. The answer is simple, money. The millions of dollars that come with having one’s own show is too much of a temptation for many journalists. These days, infotainers have the opportunity to make millions of dollars more than their journalist counterparts do.

Celebrities are all the rage these days. The public is consumed by them and every facet of their lives. They want to know the way they eat. They want to buy the same clothes and follow the same diets they do. When they break up with a high-profile celebrity, it’s all the world can seem to talk about. It’s a trend that has gotten bigger over time. The world gets smaller and smaller for celebrities.

One of the things that fascinates the public more than anything is when a celebrity deals with addiction. They know that being a celebrity is a tough life and, when the pressure gets to big and the spotlight too bright, they turn to drugs and alcohol to ease the pain and the pressure. For those celebrities it’s a dark time that leads to more problems down the road. Unfortunately, these battles against drugs and alcohol are fodder for the tabloids. It’s the top story on the news. It’s the gossip that the public can eat up. It’s not enough to know there is suffering. The public always wants more — more details, more pictures, and more videos of someone living in excess and out of control.

We forget that these people in the spotlight have families. They have friends. They have people that love them the way anyone is loved by their support system. Suffering is not news. It’s truth and it hurts, and it’s painful to watch when someone is really in deep into an addiction. This is also a constant reminder to the public that if they have their own addictions, or know someone who does, now is the time to get help. Websites like TheCyn.com and other addiction hotlines are there to help whenever needed. It’s not enough to want to get help. It must be sought out to save lives. Drugs are no game, even for a celebrity.

Yellow Journalism is a term that was coined back in 1897 when two newspapers battled it out for a larger share of circulation. As the newspapers compete against each other, the use of outrageous headlines increased.

Many of today’s gossip rags are considered yellow journalism. This type of journalism is rarely based on solid facts. The stories are dramatized and written specifically to entice readers to purchase the paper. This is like fiction under the guise of real news.

Yellow journalism papers will print any story they believe will increase circulation. It matters not that the story is almost a complete fabrication. The point is to sell papers and sell as many as possible.

Many yellow journalism papers resort to outrageous headlines that often use scare tactics to engage readers so they will buy a paper. These types of newspapers do not spend time on fact checking or verifying sources. This is a different level of journalism that is only interested in making money selling their newspaper.

Millions of people find some of these yellow journalism papers entertaining. The stories are ridiculous and the average person realizes the story is fabricated. Most people do not take any of these papers seriously. However, there is a great deal of yellow journalism on the Internet.

Many people are unable to distinguish the validity of some of the stories that appear on the Internet. Unfortunately, many people believe much of what they read even though the story is not verified in any way. The story may be a valid news story; however, yellow journalists will interject information that is not factual to promote an agenda.

Yellow journalism is alive and well in some of the nation’s most popular gossip rags and on the Internet. It is only harmful when it presents itself as authentic news.

If you were to search the Internet for unbiased news, you would find hundreds of articles addressing the issue. The demand for unbiased news is growing; however, people are experiencing difficult time finding unbiased news. Most people want the facts and nothing more.

There are many news stories that never get reported or the stories are not given much attention. If a story is not an attention grabber, you are unlikely to hear about it. News worthy stories must appeal to mainstream America. Otherwise, the story will not be told.

With so many networks and news stations competing for the attention of the American audience, objective journalism has been left behind for the sake or ratings.

Reporting from an objective approach, one must collect only the facts. The objective approach answers who, what, where, how and when. Many journalists tend to interject drama in their stories. They approach a story looking for a dramatic hook that will draw readers and listeners in. This often leads to a story that is biased.

Most people us a combination of resources to obtain the news and information they want. This consists of newspapers, radio, TV and the Internet. This combination of resources gives one a wealth of information. From this, a person can form their own opinion after researching the facts.

The media plays a big role in swaying public opinion. When listening to news reports, you always wonder what agenda is behind the story. The media has lost its true purpose, which is to inform the public. Now, the media spends most of its efforts influencing the public.

Many news stations are finally hearing the voice of Americans seeking unbiased news. With any luck, we will embark on the path of objective journalism once again. One day, news will be news and nothing more.

President Obama addressed the nation with a speech that every American needed to hear. Since the Arizona shootings, Democrats and Republicans have been tearing at each other’s throats. The American people are struggling to survive in this tough economy. Witnessing the battle and heated words between the parties was of no comfort. It was actually disheartening to many. If the leaders in our country cannot work together, how will they ever come up with solutions to move our country forward?

President Obama made a profound statement in his speech that everyone should consider. He stated, “…we will move forward together or not at all.” The President is urging the parties and the American people to cooperate to move this country forward.

Emotions and tempers are running high these days. They are running high among the American people and in Congress. It seems we cannot get past the strong division that exists. If we remain divided, it will be almost impossible to move forward.

President Obama also announced a five-year freeze on domestic spending. This may provide comfort to the American people as they have watched the deficit escalate to over 14 trillion dollars. This amount is overwhelming and has many Americans concerned about the country’s future.

While his speech did not offer specific solutions, it did address the growing division in this country and that we must all work together to get our country and economy going in the right direction.

Traditionally the parties sit apart. Many members of the opposing parties paired up to sit next to each other. This was an effort to show solidarity. The name-calling and accusations were set aside for a brief moment. Maybe they have all realized that our country is in trouble and we need leaders to find solutions.

President Obama’s speech will not fix the country; however, it may have put our focus where it needs to be.

These days, when you turn on the news you are not sure if you are watching a news report. Some of the popular news programs have resorted to sensationalism. You often wonder if the program is scripted. Then there is always the dreaded “breaking news.” This is the worst of all news. It is so dramatized you begin to wonder if you accidentally changed the channel and landed on a reality TV show.

One news station that has changed little over the years is the PBS News Hour. This is an example that shows you how news was delivered twenty years ago. There are no bells and whistles, just the news.

Most people have come accustomed to the hype on the major network news. Many of them would be stunned if they accidentally channel jumped to the PBS News Hour. They would fear they somehow managed to find themselves in some time warp. Once they realized it was just the news, they might sit in awe of the serious and in depth reporting without the sensationalism.

The PBS News Hour is a calm and professional news show. It is good to get a different perspective on news events. This is a great news show to watch in addition to your favorite news program. You should never rely on one source for all of your news. You should take in different perspectives to accumulate enough information to get the entire story.

The PBS News Hour is not nearly as lively as many of the other major networks; it is an almost peaceful way to get your news. It is a wonderful program to watch on those days where you just want the news plain and simple. You can include it as one of your news sources and you may find you actually enjoy this no frills news broadcast.

The “Great Recession” has had many effects on the American people. It seems that every industry has suffered, but some of the greatest suffering has been seen in the real estate market. With foreclosures at an all time high, the market became a seller’s nightmare and a buyer’s dream. Whether you’re looking for apartments for rent in Pittsburgh or a house to buy in Phoenix, you may be wondering if the current trends will continue or if the market will start to recover and how it could affect you.

Real Estate mogul, Warren Buffet, recently predicted a rise in the real estate market in a letter he penned to his shareholders. He says that by the time another year passes, the troubles should be mostly a thing of the past. Prices will not rise to pre-recession rates, making sellers grimace and buyers rejoice. The current pricing will allow families that couldn’t find suitable housing in their price range to find a nicer home that they can afford.

Another recent article indicates that 2011 will be yet another year in which the real estate market continues to decline due to several circumstances. Interest rates, which have been extraordinarily low, must rise at some point. When interest rates go up, housing prices could go down. While this won’t really affect banks, it will hurt sellers who desperately need out from under their home. This year will see more adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs) rise above rates and payments to which homeowners have grown accustomed. More mortgages will go into default, resulting in even more foreclosures and strain on the market. The significant number of foreclosures has lenders tightening their belts. People with average credit scores and reports, along with small down payments, will be less likely to find financing. This will limit the buying market this year.

The Internet continues to propel the world forward. We use the Internet to shop, socialize and watch videos. Most people barely remember what life was like before the Internet came along. Now, most newspapers offer online subscriptions. There are millions of people that do not have computers and do not use the Internet. Most of these people are the elderly, but there are still others that are without computers. For them, print newspaper is the only option.

Which is a good thing for those of us who still prefer kicking back with the Sunday paper. The online newspaper is a nice idea, but it is just not the same. People associate real news with newspapers. The newspaper can be folded up; you can write on it and eventually line your birdcage with it.

Sadly, many newspapers are struggling to survive in this tough economy. Many people had to end their subscriptions because they could no longer afford to pay. There are a number of cities that have lost their local newspaper because it had to shut down. Even with Internet subscriptions rising, many newspapers are barely hanging on.

The online newspapers are easy to use and you can quickly get to the story you want to read. However, you just do not seem to browse through the online newspaper as you do with a print paper.

There are times when you just want to get away from the Internet. You want to sit in a comfortable chair browsing through your daily newspaper. Even if the newspaper is filled with bad news, there is some comfort in flipping through the pages of each section.

While millions of people move forward with the information age, there are many that still enjoy the familiarity of the print newspaper. It is a reminder of when journalism was at its best.

The Internet is a wonderful resource to obtain news and information from around the world. It is also a source of misinformation. Trying to find reliable and unbiased news stories is a challenge. The beauty of the Internet is anyone can publish material. Moreover, the downside is anyone can publish material. There are numerous Web sits that appear to be legitimate news magazines or news pages. Unwittingly, many Internet users stumble on these pages and assume objective journalists write the material. We have now moved from the Information Age to the Misinformation Age.

The average person is unable to distinguish between articles written by authentic journalists and writers simply expressing an opinion. There are thousands of Web sites that appear as authentic news sites. Unfortunately, many of these Web sites are supporting a specific agenda. The information is not fact-checked and in most cases, the information is not even remotely accurate. Sadly, people read this information and pass it on through conversations with family, friends and coworkers.

People no longer trust the evening news or newspapers. In an effort to garner ratings, the evening news is like watching a bad reality show. Most Americans will tell you they do not trust the government and they do not trust the media. This lack of trust has created a venue for unscrupulous journalist and anyone who wants to push an agenda to capture an audience of information seekers. Internet users are searching for the facts and stumbling on phony news sites that pass on fiction as fact.

With so much information available on the Internet, people are becoming confused. Trust has been broken and this has pushed the door of misinformation wide open. Now, most people long for the days when the news was just the news and nothing more.

In a recent article for the Business Section of a local, Southern California newspaper the attitudes and expectations of employers and employees was explored. According to the article, it seems that the economic meltdown has contributed to the development of a be here or else attitude amongst employers. It is an attitude that can be observed amongst the self-employed, small business owners, as well as the larger corporations. And with employment rates higher than they have been in years, employees are feeling the pressure to report to work during times of illness, even when they have sick time accrued.

If employees report to work despite illness, businesses and customers will not have to contend with service disruption. This in turn may have a positive impact on customer satisfaction. However, there is the possibility that customer service may decrease, due to the attitude of employees who are too sick to provide appropriate attention to their job duties. There is also the issue of exposing other employees to sick workers, and perhaps creating a cycle of illness amongst the staff.

It seems that employees are succumbing to the pressure of employers who value business profits over employee health. With the focus on competition, business owners have learned that customer service is a major factor in success. If companies are plagued with sick employees, production may drop, customer service may languish, and customer needs will not be met. As a result, customers may choose to patronize a competitor’s business. However, customer service may suffer if sick employees are pressured to work. After last year’s H1N1 concern, the public is even more aware of precautions necessary to remain healthy. Exposing customers to the germs and sluggish demeanor of sick employees may result in a negative impression of the company. This may be of special concern to those working in the service industries, where employee/customer contact is high.

Actually it’s ‘MySpace’ and ‘Facebook’. To be even more accurate, the CURRENT names are ‘My_____’ (clever there!) and simply ‘facebook’ (lowercase, and honestly they’ve retained that since they started, but you have to admit it looks funny in lowercase!). We have the premiere social giants of this decade, nay, century! And everyone always asks this timeless question, a question to define the ages. It’s for sure that it has been asked before, but there hasn’t been a definitive answer.

Until now. Await these words of wisdom, friends. The answer is nigh.

With the change in times and social media growing larger and larger by the day, it’s very difficult to even compare the two. A half decade ago, it was easier. Now, not so much. The obvious question always in social mogul minds is this: which site is better? Keep in mind that the question isn’t ‘which site is more POPULAR?’. Sources would say that currently, even regarding profits and traffic, that ‘facebook’ is now the leader of the pack with MySpace running a close second.

This isn’t a popularity contest, though. Be objective here and consider the characteristics carefully:

The answer to this age-old question, ‘which one is better?’, is none other than the philosophical, existential saying of “depends on who you are and what you do!”. That’s your answer. Think about it.

If you look at both sites right now, you’ll notice a demographic for both. It’s very distinct. Surf the sites, and you’ll find that MySpace has obviously geared its bits toward the entertainment industry to some degree. Music artists, playlists, professional MySpace pages, the whole nine yards. Likewise, what ‘facebook’ has developed is a more social background–one filled with online games and fun solo games, trivia, and a more creative approach to marketing.

Both sites have earned their niche well. All that awaits now is the Twitter onslaught. Watch out for it. Very soon in this digital age it’ll be a 3-way contest.

Although we have several means to quench our knowledge for news information via cyberspace, many still prefer to hold a newspaper in their hands. The Internet offers a wide selection of topics but writers might be new to the industry. If our printing ribbon is running low, we may have to resort to the copy and paste function within our email applications. So, there’s something timeless about reading the daily or weekly paper. Current information will gradually become a part of history and we might be interested in keeping a tactile collection of memorable events without the need for using our own printing resources.

Many of us look forward to perusing through newsworthy information via the paper if we’re looking forward to reading our favorite writer’s contribution. With so many people on the run between home and the workplace, it’s probably easier to pair our favorite local, national, or international paper with our coffee tumbler (rather than bring an expensive pocket computer or I-pad). The paper may offer us a sense of comfort by being in-the-know. We’re social beings and might want to offer something more meaningful to the conversation. Perhaps it has become a traditional part of our morning or evening routines.

Writers and editors alike may need to exert a bit more effort when it comes to putting information through the traditional presses. Fact-checkers must do their best to double-check and present their acquired knowledge to the reporters and writers. Once articles are available in print, readers will be probably far less likely to draw blank when attempting to recall what they learned.

The news headlines we choose to examine more closely depend on our experiences or personal tastes. If readers envy luxurious lifestyles, they might look to the paper’s celebrity section or the included magazine insert. However we choose to remain informed, papers hot off the press can hold more appreciation and sentimental value.

Back in 2007, Michael Vick, then an Atlanta Falcon, was charged with managing a dog fighting organization. He was said to have been involved with both the financial aspects of the ring and the fighting of the dogs themselves. After pleading guilty in federal to involvement in the killing of up to eight dogs, Vick failed a drug test on bail and was sentenced 23 months in prison. He was also charged at the state level, and Vick was released in mid-2009.

Most recently, Vick has stated he wishes to again own a dog. After being released from a nearly two-year sentence, Vick began his probation. He cannot own a dog while on probation, but that ends in 2012. Is it OK for Vick to own a dog even after serving time for his crimes and completing probation? He explained in the news how his daughters long for a family dog, and Vick has done his share of redemption and charity work fighting against animal cruelty.

Many are quick to compare Vick’s dog ownership to a pedophile being allowed to babysit or live near a school, but perhaps those comparisons are a tad harsh. Vick has served his sentence and has been an upstanding citizen throughout his probation. Why are Americans so quick to deny someone a second chance? The fact that the issue is about dogs complicates things because of many people’s intimate attachments to their own dogs and family pets.

While Vick certainly was cruel in his callous involvement with dog fighting rings, he should not be punished for life. And his daughters should not be punished for his former actions, either. If Vick has proven he is capable of treating dogs with care and has done his time, he should be given the chance to demonstrate that to his children and the public.

Newspapers and their opinions sections are both engaging and humorous at the same time. Many people who write in these articles tend to have a definitive ground that they stand on, and write biasly towards that direction, hence the need for opinion sections. The ironic thing about many of these writers, is that they do not seem to be really reading what they are writing. They are merely impressed with themselves, and have no concern about the audience this is presented to, or the individual reader. This makes it hard for the reader to continue with the read, and at some levels, respect the author. When readers are able to label a writers philosophic point of view, and are able to categorize as left, right, liberal, bias, then you know you have potentially lost your audience, and your cause.
Here is a suggestion, do not talk at people, rather inform through an interested conversation. Allow your readers to feel like they can be active participants in your writing. This makes your audience feel like you care about their point of view as well. Using big stuffy phrases, and over-emphasizing the few categorical facts you know simply will not persuade readers. There is nothing wrong about opining in the opinion section, but if the presentation is too advantageous, the reader will want to fire back, which is the complete opposite of the result a writer is looking for, unless of course the writer is searching for a debate.
Many of the national newspapers offer an opinion section. Take time and read what has been presented. This might provide an opportunity to see what the public sees, and to experience what the public experiences. You can then carve your writing to accommodate, and be presented to, the exact tone that you are seeking. This will help you gain fans, and fine tune your writing skill.

Staying updated with the current news is very important in today’s world. Whether you are trying to keep an eye on your investments with the stock market, seeing what the weather will be like for a trip you are planning or you are just curious as to what is happening in the world at that current moment, you want to ensure you are getting your news information from a credible place. Here are a few different ways to stay current with the news.

Subscribing to a local newspaper has long been a popular way for people to stay informed and know what is currently going on in the world. If you live in a more rural area you may want to subscribe to a newspaper from the largest town near your location to ensure you get the newest headlines. Some people even opt to subscribe to weekly newspapers from other states such as New York as a way to stay current with world events.

If you do not already have satellite television or cable, ordering it is also an excellent way to keep current with the news. Satellite and cable television offers viewers several different news channels to choose from and watch. Now you do not have to wait until a certain time of day to watch the news. Instead you can turn on one of these channels and have the news from all the around the world on at your convenience.

Going online to the internet is another good way to stay up to date with what is happening in the world. There are several internet news sites to visit that update their news information all the time so you can be sure to find the most current, reliable information. Some websites also give visitors the chance to subscribe to them so they can send out updates when new headlines are available.

Often when we turn on the news these days, the stories are filled with opinions. Sometimes just the limit of the coverage of an event is how an opinion is presented. It isn’t always blatant and obvious but we may start to find that a story can be limited just by what it left out of the story. Any individual can start to find out information from direct sources rather than what the news reporters decide is entertaining enough for the audience.

During news reports on TV or in the newspaper we just get short moments from the days events. Today, with the extent of information on the internet we can actually connect with entire events. For those of us that want to connect directly with events that happen without interruption there are many opportunities for this.

A good example of this is for those interested in topics from the United States Government. Almost any speech made by the American president can be viewed from the White House website. there are many moments of the American President in public that can’t be seen on network television or you may not hear about in the newspapers. But there is opportunity to see video of these events in entirety.

One can expand this concept and even though you hear about an organization in the news or an opinion about an organization you can research it yourself. See the point of view of that particular organization yourself on its website. there is no reason you have to take the opinion or limited coverage of one reporter over hearing directly.

It’s up to you. If something is important to you all you have to do is use the resources that are available to you. Don’t stop at hearing one report. Listen to opposing views and consider the truth yourself.

Britain’s much-loved television personality Jamie Oliver has a huge smile on his face as this week US President Obama signed the child nutrition bill called “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act” into law.

Jamie’s popular Food Revolution series opened the American public’s eyes to what kinds of foods children are being served for school lunches and the sad statistics concerning childhood obesity.

What exactly is this new landmark bill and the significant improvements expected for the child nutrition program?
4.5 billion dollars are expected to be funded over the next 10 years to subsidize the program without accumulation to the federal deficient.
Provisions have been made to allow the US Dept of Agriculture to revise the national school nutrition guidelines for foods sold outside of school lunch programs. This means granting them the authority to have unhealthy foods removed from ala cart lines, on-campus fundraising, and school vending machines, improving students’ diets, and removing unhealthy items that will weaken school meal initiatives.
The goal
Invest in and improve the quality of nutrition to improve health
Aid in the prevention of childhood obesity
Expand access to school lunch programs in efforts to reduce hungry children
Improve the integrity of school lunch programs
Simplify the management of lunch programs
Create national standards on nutrition for all foods sold on campus
Expand after-school programs to include meals for at-risk kids
Make it possible for more low-income children to enroll and qualify for lunch programs

The new bill received a mixed reaction from the public with some feeling this is just another way for the government to interfere with the way parents raise their children. Those for the bill conclude that for some children this might be the first and only opportunities (due to economic factors) that allow them to have at least one well-balanced and nutritional meal served to them a day.

In my humble opinion, Martha Stewart’s famous quote fits as “it’s a good thing”.

Newspapers are, of course, a great source for news. Offering news in national, international, local, weather and sports, newspapers keep citizens abreast of breaking news, updates and predictions. However, newspapers also offer sections that can challenge readers: The opinion sections. These sections can be written by Associated Press writers, local writers and/or citizens. Often connecting to current news, events or issues, the opinion articles offer stances on issues and encourage reader response. The drive of the opinion sections in the newspaper business is to increase readership by inciting argument and agreement in readers.

Inciting Argument

Newspapers realize that half of the readers are most likely liberal and half conservative, therefore, newspapers often encourage one-sided opinion articles that will incite argument. A reader who is highly averse to an opinion may write a response to the opinion piece, which the newspaper can then choose to post. The give and take of this argument can incite more reader response, and readers may choose to renew a subscription for the opinion articles.

Inciting Agreement

On the other hand, readers who agree with the opinion writer may choose to renew their subscriptions to read the opinion writer’s response to the argument. Alternately, the agreeable reader may wish to read the opinion writer’s pieces to feel understood or to further understand an issue. In desiring an ally, an agreeable reader can identify a opinion writer, for example. Additionally, to further understand an issue, a reader may wish to read the opinion article for a quick one paragraph synopsis of the situation. In any case, inciting agreement can increase or retain readership.

Opinion sections can be very intense tools for reader retention and increased readership. By inciting argument and agreement, an opinion section can help readers either voice an alternate opinion or develop an ally in article’s writer.
